In The Cat Box...

June 18, 2005

Johnny Public has a new personality! Starting with issue 10 we'll be adding a letter column, hosted by Hula Cat mascot Wyeth. So send those missives in and let us know what you're thinking!

Also as of issue 9 (now available!), Johnny Public will no longer contain the Case Notes (recap of the story so far) or Public Disclosure (author notes) sections. We're working hard to consistently provide more pages of story in every issue, and space is becoming a bit too limited. That's our felling, at any rate, and if you feel differently, then I reckon you've got something to write us about. :)

If you just can't get enough of Wendi's work, check out Plastic Farm 9. Plastic Farm (www.plasticfarm.com) collects the shards of one man's shattered life, regularly featuring guest artists that help creator Rafer Roberts (Dope Fiends of the Zombie Cafe!) set the mood of each piece. Wendi draws the inner story of issue 9, the action-packed background of Raoul, a baggage handler.

That's it for now. There are other exciting projects in the works, but we'll save those for later.

Until then, take care of yourselves!

You can't change the past but you can try to put it to rest, as Tommy Pine does in this poignant slice of life. Says co-publisher and artist, Wendi Strang-Frost, "...A Yearly Treat brings flash fiction to mind. It is the comic book equivalent of flash fiction: visual poetry."

A Yearly Treat will be available through Hula Cat Comics at Motor City Comic Con, October 16th and 17th in Novi, Michigan. After Motor City copies may be purchased via the web site (www.hulacatcomics.com) or through the mail by sending $2.00 (S/H inc.) to Hula Cat Comics, PO Box 279, Manchester, MI 48158.

New Comic Publisher Releases First Comic: Zombies and Beatniks Clash!

(Manchester, MI) - Hula Cat Comics, a Michigan-based comic book publisher, will be releasing its first minicomic, Dope Fiends of the Zombie Cafe, at SPX this October 1st through 3rd in Bethesda, Maryland. Dope Fiends of the Zombie Cafe, a $3.00, 30 page, digest-sized minicomic with a full color cover, was written by Johnny Public author Sean Frost and drawn by Rafer Roberts, creator of the hit indy comic Plastic Farm.

In Dope Fiends of the Zombie Cafe, an experimental, radioactive preservative leaks into Centerville's marijuana crop, initiating the human testing phase ahead of schedule. High school pinball champ Tommy and his best gal Betty Marie must battle beatnik zombies, poetry readings, and mad science. (Suggested for mature readers due to language, graphic violence, and one really bad toupee.)

Artist Rafer Roberts says, "Dope Fiends is, by far, my best drawing to date. Sean really knocked himself out by giving me a script that played to what I draw well, and challenged me to draw other things better."

Writer Sean Frost adds, "I read a short comic by Rafer about John Watson's experiments to make a child fear a white rat. The way Rafer rendered the rat was truly inspired, and I vowed that I would get him to draw zombie rabbits for me. The story just sort of built up around that."

New publisher Hula Cat Comics is happy to have Dope Fiends as its first offering. "Dope Fiends of the Zombie Cafe sets the proper tone for our publishing company," says co-publisher Wendi Strang-Frost. "We want to publish fun, entertaining comics. As you can tell from Dope Fiends, we are completely addicted to B-movies and we can't help but put a little of that flavor into our comics." Before launching Hula Cat Comics, co-publishers Wendi Strang-Frost and Sean Frost had been self-publishing their minicomic series Johnny Public for three years. Hula Cat will continue to offer Johnny Public in the future.

Dope Fiends of the Zombie Cafe will be available through artist Rafer Roberts at SPX , October 1st through 3rd, at the Plastic Farm table. Advanced orders can be placed on the Hula Cat website: www.hulacatcomics.com via PayPal. After SPX copies can be purchased via the web site or through the mail by sending $4.00 (S/H inc.) to Hula Cat Comics, PO Box 279, Manchester, MI 48158.
